Climate Hero in Action
: Courtney Mattison
The message I am trying to send to the viewers of my artwork is to try anything to raise awareness. Courtney Mattison does this by creating artwork and portraying ocean bleaching. I think she also has a similar message as mine, as most of her artwork are very consistent and have a very impactful
message in their title, such as ‘Our Changing Seas’. Courtney Mattison helped me realize that there are people who try to spread the message, even though they might not be gaining lots of fame.

Inspired by a photograph I took, this painting contrasts birds outside and pumpkins inside
a cage. The cage is both positive protection and a difficult barrier. For the pumpkins, it provides protection from animals and keeps them from rotting on the floor. On the other hand, the cage is a barrier for the birds since they cannot access the inside. This is very contrasting compared to our normal lives, as we usually keep birds in cages and pumpkins outside. That is why I decided to call this art piece “Exchange.”
Exchange
When you write something with ink, it becomes a permanent mark on the paper.
For this reason, to draw is to imagine. When I am imagining something, I go deep inside my mind.
Here, I can mix the imaginary and reality however I wish.
It is the opposite of dreams, because when dreaming, you can’t control your surroundings.
In my imagination, I am the creator and I control what happens.
Each time I enter my imagination, I don’t know what I will find there.
That is the beauty of discovery and creativity. When I have found my artistic inspiration,
I’m ready to return to reality.

What would the world be like without any pollution, such as carbon emissions?
I asked this question to myself when drawing this artwork. First, use of cars would be very rare. Instead, people would use bikes or scooters to travel around. Second, recycling, and growing plants would be very common. Finally, sustainable energy would be supported even more because of how renewable it is. While this is the world we want to live in, we would need to change substantially to make it happen.

With inflation, the price level of all goods and services will rise.
Paying a million dollars for a cup of coffee is greatly exaggerated, of course.
But I wanted to show how inflation and overall increase in prices and cost of living can be overwhelming.
Everyone looks at hedgehogs and thinks of them as cute, amicable animals.
However, people are not aware of what hedgehogs really are.

The Cat, the Mice, and the Butterfly
This painting is inspired by Korean traditional painting, also known as Minhwa. This is a combination of two different Minhwa, an artwork drawn during this period, one of a cat and a butterfly and of a watermelon. In the Joseon dynasty, Minhwa depicting various objects and animals had symbolic significance. Based on its Chinese character, cat and butterfly respectively signify a 70-year-old person and an 80-year-old person. Moreover, a drawing of a butterfly represents the love between a married couple, and a drawing of a watermelon symbolically protects one’s household from thieves. Altogether, they portray the longevity of a healthy, married couple living happily ever after without any interference from outside sources.
Many Korean folktales focus on misinterpretation and
mis-understandings. One of the many stories is 'The Tiger and Dried Persimmon'.
Once upon a time, there was a hungry tiger that was near a town to find something to eat. However, the tiger heard a small child crying. The child was then comforted by his grandmother using a dried persimmon. At that moment, the tiger misinterpreted a dried
persimmon as something much scarier than itself. As the tiger was about to leave, a thief jumped on the tiger, as he thought the tiger was an ox. The tiger then thought the thief was the dried persimmon and started running away. Like this, it is important to fully understand things.
